All hosting plans include a different amount of disk storage space for your hosting needs. The sum of the file sizes, all your email, and all your databases on a plan constitutes your total disk storage for that plan. You can see current usage or set limits on how much space any specific user can use via your control panel. Just for estimation purposes, a typical page of a web site is 30KB (1024KB = 1MB) and a typical email message is 3KB.

Every time somebody visits your web site, or downloads a file from it, they use a little bit of transfer bandwidth in the process. Each plan comes with a different amount of included bandwidth per month, as well as a cost for any extra transfer over that. Our bandwidth allocations are very generous and are rarely ever even close to being reached by any of our clients.

You are required to register your domain name via a domain registrar before it works on the Internet. Because of the world-wide nature of the Internet, of course only ONE person can own any given domain name at the same time. That's why you need to register yours before you start using it, and it has to be a domain name nobody else has already registered. Although you don't have to register your domain at the same place you use for hosting, it generally makes the whole process a lot simpler. You can transfer your domain registration between hosts at no charge. You are the owner of your domain name.

If you already own a domain name (one that you've registered), you can transfer your hosting to jtfhosting at no cost. To do so, you will have to tell your domain registrar (where you registered the domain) to change the DNS servers for your domain to be:

Generally, it takes a day or two once this is done for the entire Internet to correctly reflect the change and begin to look to our servers when trying to access your site or send you email. This delay is due to the time it takes for DNS changes to "propagate" to all the local DNS servers at ISPs across the globe. Because of this, it's typically a good idea to also keep your site and email set up with your old provider while you are waiting for the transfer to propagate if you want to avoid any downtime.

When you register any domain name, ICANN requires that your information is made available for anyone to find on the web. Telemarketers, spammers, marketers, and sometimes other people with bad intent mine the WHOIS database to get your information. Our private registrations:

POP3 is one of three ways you can access email in your mailboxes hosted with us (the other two being IMAP and web-based email). All email clients in existence today support the POP3 protocol, which downloads your mail from our server and copies it to your local hard drive. You can usually specify in your email client if you'd like a copy of the email to be kept on the mail server or not (or even to delete old mail only after a certain number of days). POP3 is nice if you don't want to stay connected to the Internet while reading and responding to your email: you can just connect, download the messages, disconnect, read and reply to your messages, re-connect, send the messages, and then disconnect!

Horde is an e-mail client that uses IMAP to provide your email account users with access to their email messages directly on the Internet. A "catch-all" email account receives emails addressed to undefined or nonexistent users. For example, if an email is addressed to john@yourdomain.com, but the username "john" does not exist on that domain, the email is automatically routed to the catch-all account.

Most users will have at least two email accounts set up on their server. One would be a "real" email address to give out to family, friends, business contacts, and anyone else you actually wish to hear from. The other might be a "generic" catch-all account, so literally ANYTHING addressed to your domain would be received by this account. You must check for mail messages in BOTH these accounts on your server to retrieve your messages.

When you turn it on, every time someone sends an email to that address, they'll immediately get a reply email with whatever message you choose. This is useful for automatic distribution of documents, "I'm on vacation" notices, customer support email addresses, and the like. You can add, remove, or change auto-responders at any time through your control panel.

Allows you to route all email coming to one address on your domain and send it to another address outside your domain. For example, you can forward all email addressed to john@yourdomain.com to john@aol.com. This comes in handy when you have many email addresses, and you want to combine them into one email account to manage them easier.

One email address (also known as an email "alias") can be set to forward to any number of other addresses and mailboxes.

Spam is any unsolicited e-mail message. Through your Control Panel, you can control spam by creating a spam filter to block specific email originating from outside the server. This powerful feature is a great way to reduce Spam from hitting your personal or business addresses. This is also useful when you just want to block unwanted users from e-mailing you. For instance, you may block an e-mail address, domain name, or IP address. Our spam filter (powered by Spamassain) flags incoming e-mail messages that have a high-probability of being junk e-mail as spam. Spamassain relies on a centralized spam database to help it analyze potential spam messages.

Every Web hosting plan comes with mailing lists that you can set up, allowing visitors to your site to subscribe through a simple HTML form. You can then periodically email everyone on the list things like newsletters or announcements. You can send plain text or HTML emails with our announcement list and you can require confirmed opt-in for all new subscribers.

cPanel is the control panel for your Web hosting account. cPanel allows you to perform all administration aspects of your account: view account status (disk usage and bandwidth), view graphical Web site stats, manage files, add/edit your email accounts, access Web email, set up and manage your mailing lists and autoresponders, manage users, download your raw logs, perform backup and restores, and more.

Every domain hosted comes with unlimited sub-domains. A sub-domain works just like a regular domain in terms of being able to have its own web content and email addresses. These subdomains will share the disk space, ftp access, web logs, cgi-bin and e-mail of the primary domain. The only difference is it takes the form of subdomain.yourdomain.com. You can add and configure sub-domains from our control panel.

An add-on domain is a domain name that that points to a subdirectory within your account. Add-on domains must be registered domain names that you own, and must be configured to point to your Web site's servers.

If you would like to create another site using the same space of your current account, you will need an add-on domain to point to this new site. The space you use for the add-on domain will reduce the amount of space you use overall.

The Redirects allows you to redirect Internet traffics from one web page to another or from one domain to another. This is usually used when a web page has been moved to another location or if you have your.com this can be redirected to yourcompany.com.

You can set up a domain name that you own to point to another domain name. This is known as "parking" a domain.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) transfers the files that comprise your Web site to our server. To connect, you'll need to know your username (yourdomain.com) and password. You should copy your Web site into the public_html folder, not the default root folder. Whenever you upload new data to your Web site, the changes show up immediately on your live site (you may have to reload the page in your browser).
